The Dairy 2007 study examined heifer calf health and management practices on U.S. dairy operations. Key findings include:
86.0% of cows and heifers delivered a live calf,
8.1% of calves were stillborn,
60.5% of operations had guidelines for calving intervention,
91.9% provided training in calving intervention,
59.2% of operations hand-fed colostrum to calves,
19.2% of heifer calves had failure of passive transfer of immunity,
the average age of heifers at weaning was 8.2 weeks,
9.3% of operations raised dairy heifers off-site,
7.8% of preweaned heifers and 1.8% of weaned heifers died,
scours and digestive problems accounted for 56.5% of preweaned heifer deaths,
respiratory disease was the largest cause of weaned heifer deaths (46.5%).
