Summary

The goal of this research is to understand how drivers fail to detect approaching vehicles, specifically snowplows, in fog and snow conditions. The study examined the effect of color on detection, finding that colors in the red-yellow spectrum can create a dangerous equiluminant situation, reducing the ability to perceive approach. Perception studies showed that low contrast in snow clouds reduces the ability to detect approach, and flashing lights can decrease the chances of avoiding a crash. The research proposed additional ways to improve warning light placement to reduce rear-end collisions.
