Summary

The state of American entrepreneurship is crucial for the economy, with high-growth startups contributing significantly to job creation and innovation. However, only a small fraction of new businesses experience explosive growth, and the overall ability of entrepreneurship to facilitate economic prosperity depends disproportionately on the performance of a few firms. To assess the state of American entrepreneurship, it is essential to account for "the skew" - the fact that a small number of firms drive the majority of economic growth. Traditional measures of entrepreneurship, such as quantity-based and performance-based approaches, have limitations and have led to divergent perspectives on the state of American entrepreneurship. A new approach, using comprehensive business registries and predictive analytics, calculates the underlying growth potential of startups and yields new findings, including a cyclical pattern of high-potential growth startups and strong differences across place and time in the likelihood of startups to realize their potential and scale.
