Summary

The US faces a growing concern of homegrown terrorism, with individuals being radicalized and recruited within the country. Terrorist groups exploit the Internet to spread propaganda and recruit US-based individuals. This thesis examines how terrorist groups use the Internet to radicalize and recruit, and evaluates the effectiveness of US programs aimed at combating violent extremism (CVE). The research finds that US-based individuals can become radicalized through self-radicalization, and that terrorist groups use the Internet as a primary tool for recruitment, but still prefer personal interactions. The study also suggests that government-led CVE programs may contribute to the alienation of Muslim communities, but do not necessarily lead to radicalization.
