La pandemia de COVID-19 plantea un desafío al sistema socioeconómico mundial, afectando tanto a economías avanzadas como a países emergentes. Se anticipa un estancamiento o recesión global, con una caída del PIB global de 2020 de 850 billones de dólares inferior a las previsiones iniciales. La digitalización puede actuar como factor mitigante, reduciendo el impacto disruptivo de la pandemia, y América Latina y el Caribe tienen la oportunidad de avanzar en políticas de telesalud, teleducación y teletrabajo. La región ha avanzado significativamente en el desarrollo de su infraestructura digital en las últimas décadas, pero es importante interrogarse sobre la posición de América Latina en términos del grado de preparación de su infraestructura digital y el nivel de digitalización para afrontar los desafíos de la pandemia. Se plantean preguntas como si el ecosistema digital de la región está preparado para afrontar el desafío de la pandemia, si la digitalización puede reducir el impacto disruptivo de la pandemia, y si el sistema productivo latinoamericano puede migrar a un contexto donde las cadenas de aprovisionamiento están apoyadas en el flujo eficiente de información digital.
