Summary

The purpose of this research is to understand current and potential food policy work at municipal sustainability offices across America. The study surveyed 267 sustainability office employees and 36 sustainability and food councils, and found that the most common activities reported were promoting food choices that increase sustainability (70%), educating the public about the relationship between food and sustainability (62%), and conducting life-cycle assessments of emissions (13%). The activities focused on four topics: food growing, food accessibility, food waste, and food consumption, with 33% focusing on food growing and 22% on food waste. Only 16% of activities focused on food consumption, and 28% promoted plant-based foods. Key takeaways include that many sustainability offices view food as relevant to sustainability, but are in the early phases of work in this area, focusing on education and outreach or programs that support local initiatives.
