Summary

The moral imperative to address sustainability is inescapable, with the World Commission on Environment and Development defining it as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainability encompasses environmental, demographic, and social concerns, including equality and financial sustainability. Research has emphasized the role of governments, corporations, and the broader community in achieving sustainability, but less attention has been paid to micro-level concerns, such as the role of professional and knowledge workers.

Project management (PM) is a key profession in developing a sustainable economy and society, with project managers possessing the technical skills and knowledge required to implement sustainability initiatives. The "projectification" of society, where tasks and activities are reorganized as projects, places project managers in a prominent economic and societal position. This research aims to contribute to the understanding of the importance of professionals like project managers in building a more sustainable economy and society, focusing on how the PM profession has contributed to the development, adoption, adaptation, and rejection of sustainability principles and practices.

The growing interest in sustainability and PM is reflected in the increasing number of academic publications on this topic, with a growing debate amongst practitioners focusing on the issue of sustainable projects. PM has developed new methodologies, tools, and techniques that foreground a concern with sustainability, such as the GPM P5 Standard for Sustainability in Project Management. Theoretically, the importance of project managers is not limited to their functional roles as implementers of sustainable technical solutions but refers to the broader institutional role that professions exercise in accomplishing radical change, including challenging assumptions and practices to create and institutionalize new organizational models and working arrangements.
