Our lives are supported by the natural blessings of forests, rivers, and oceans, which provide essential ecosystem services. Historically, natural resources and energy from these ecosystems supported local food, clothing, and shelter, with resources being circulated and utilized sustainably. Each region developed its unique culture, history, and geography, forming diverse and individualized landscapes. To achieve sustainable living, local wisdom and technologies were passed down to manage and coexist with nature. However, post-war energy revolutions, industrialization, and globalization have led to increased material wealth and convenience, but also resulted in urbanization, environmental pollution, and climate change, causing a loss of sustainability.

The concept of "regional circular symbiosis" was introduced in 2018 as a way to create a self-sustaining and decentralized society. This approach aims to utilize local resources, reduce waste, and promote economic and social development while protecting the environment. The Ministry of the Environment has launched various initiatives to support the creation of regional circular symbiosis, including the "Regional Circular Symbiosis Platform" and the "Good Life Award."

Examples of regional circular symbiosis include the introduction of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, and the creation of smart grids to manage energy distribution. The town of Muttsuawa in Chiba Prefecture has implemented a smart energy system that utilizes solar power, gas cogeneration, and natural gas to provide energy for its residents. This system has not only reduced the town's carbon footprint but also provided a reliable source of energy during natural disasters.

Another example is the partnership between the city of Setagaya in Tokyo and the city of Tokamachi in Niigata Prefecture, which has resulted in the creation of a zero-carbon city through the use of geothermal energy. This partnership has enabled the city of Setagaya to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable energy production.

These initiatives demonstrate the potential for regional circular symbiosis to create sustainable and resilient communities, and highlight the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving a more sustainable future.
