Summary

Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit individuals for labor or commercial sex. It has three key elements: recruiting or obtaining a person, using force, fraud, or coercion, and doing so for the purpose of involuntary servitude, debt bondage, slavery, or sex trade. Examples include a 17-year-old girl being pimped out by a man she met at the mall and a 35-year-old man being coerced into signing a contract for exploitative labor. Indiana law and federal law, such as the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, prohibit human trafficking and provide penalties for traffickers. Anyone can be a victim, but vulnerability is a key factor, with risk factors including childhood abuse, poverty, and homelessness. Traffickers use various methods to recruit victims, including social media, false advertising, and coercion. Identification of trafficked persons can be done through social indicators, such as controlled behavior, frequent relocation, and restricted communication, as well as health indicators like neglected healthcare needs, physical abuse, and malnourishment, and mental health indicators like symptoms of trauma and anxiety.
