What is Relay Iowa?

Relay Iowa provides specialized telephone communication services for Iowans who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or have difficulty speaking, ensuring they can connect with family, friends, and businesses easily.

How Does it Work?

Users dial 7-1-1 (or specific toll-free numbers) to access the service. A Communication Assistant relays conversations between text telephone (TTY) users and hearing individuals, or between other parties as needed. All calls are confidential.

Types of Services:

- TTY (Text Telephone): For those who use a text-based system.
- Voice Carry Over (VCO): Allows hearing individuals to speak into the phone while the Communication Assistant types their message.
- Hearing Carry Over (HCO): Enables deaf or hard of hearing users to listen and respond during calls.
- Speech-to-Speech (STS): Specialized relay service for individuals who have difficulty speaking.
- Spanish: For Spanish-speaking residents.
- Captioned Telephone: Ideal for hearing individuals who can speak, displaying both audio and text on the screen.

Accessing Equipment:

The Iowa Equipment Distribution Program (Telecommunications Access Iowa - TAI) helps fund specialized equipment for eligible Iowans. Apply online at www.relayiowa.com/tai/ or by calling 1-800-606-5099 V/TTY.
