The report analyzes water quantity and quality in central and south Iraq from 1998 to 2018, finding that public water supply is generally met, but shortages occur in several governorates, with Al-Najaf having the highest prevalence of unmet water public supply. Irrigation uses the largest volume of fresh water and may experience supply gaps, especially in dry years. The study suggests that increasing irrigation efficiency could reduce water shortages, and improving water treatment of public wastewater could improve water quality, with primary treatment reducing F.Coli and BOD concentrations.
