The Data Bulletin series aims to summarize existing evidence on migration to support the discussion and implementation of the Global Compact for Migration. Public opinion on migration is relevant to the implementation of the Compact, as it influences policymakers and shapes perceptions of migration. A correct understanding of public attitudes towards migration is essential to eliminate discrimination and promote evidence-based public discourse.

Globally, public opinion is divided on whether to increase, decrease, or keep present immigration levels, with 34% of the population wanting to see immigration decreased, 21% increased, and 22% kept at its present level. However, there are large differences in public opinion between regions, with people in Europe tend to hold more negative views towards immigration, while attitudes towards immigration levels are more positive in the US.

Public opinion differs depending on migrant and respondent characteristics and contextual factors, such as the history and size of the immigrant population, its level of ethnic diversity, the origin, religion, and skill level of immigrants. The availability and accuracy of data related to migration can also affect public opinion, with a lack of comprehensive and nuanced information inflating stereotypical public perceptions of immigration and its effects in host communities.
