Summary

The US Department of State may approve a pipeline to transport 830,000 barrels of tar sands oil daily to Texas refineries unless sufficient objections are raised. The scientific community must get involved, as approving this project would make it difficult to control tar sands development, which could lead to disastrous global climate impacts. Tar sands contain an estimated 400 GtC, equivalent to 200 ppm CO2, and exploiting them would make it implausible to stabilize the climate. The pipeline project does not serve the national interest, as it would contribute substantially to climate change, and its approval would be a huge mistake.
