A unique algae bloom occurred in the lake due to a long winter with good ice and snow cover, which blocked sunlight and caused aquatic plants to die off.
When the snow melted and rain events occurred, a rush of surface water with nutrients entered the lake, and since the aquatic plants were dead, the algae consumed the nutrients, resulting in a massive algae bloom.
The algae bloom can be beneficial for the lake as it starts the food chain, but it's essential that it's just a phase and doesn't stay all year or turn into bad blue-green algae.
The lake is clearing up, and the aquatic vegetation is starting to flourish, with crews maintaining the shorelines and controlling invasive plants.
The Lake Pewaukee Sanitary District is encouraging lake property owners to participate in pile pick-ups on Mondays and Fridays to help remove weeds and minimize prop chop.
The district is also reminding residents not to flush cleaning rags and other non-biodegradable items down the toilet, as it can clog sewer pumps and increase user fees.
Additionally, the district is addressing illegal sump pump connections, which can send grey water through the sanitary sewer system and increase treatment costs for everyone in the district.
Residents are encouraged to contact the district if they have any issues or concerns, and the district will inspect homes at no cost to help resolve any problems.
