When it comes to an election, candidates make all the usual declarations, such as wanting to improve the Island by diversifying the economy, calling for more openness, transparency and accountability and promising to look after the vulnerable and the most needy. However, over the years I, like you, have become fed up with our politicians and prospective politicians making these same promises but never fulfilling them. As a Liberal Vannin Party member, I have gained a better understanding of the current parliamentary process and why our politicians are unable to keep their promises. The main reasons are the block vote by the Council of Ministers and the current system of patronage. It is also clear to me that the lack of scrutiny is why so many financial disasters have been allowed to happen. Liberal Vannin will be pushing for a Freedom of Information Act, without which no effective scrutiny can take place. The Island is not in for an easy time in the next few years and it is imperative that fiascos, such as the MEA, are not repeated. Too much of your money has already been wasted. As a Braddan Commissioner, I have demonstrated I am prepared to take tough decisions. Over the last five years we have reduced the administration costs by more than 19% without affecting services. I have also shown that I am committed to Liberal Vannin policies and the people of the Isle of Man by the role I played in issues such as the Reciprocal Health Agreement. As part of the Liberal Vannin team, I look forward to working hard to overcome the difficulties that the Island will be facing and bringing about a more positive future for all. If elected, I promise to do my very best for you and put your interests before mine.
