Summary

Entrepreneurs of color remain underrepresented and have lower rates of entrepreneurship than their white counterparts, with Black-owned and Hispanic-owned firms having higher failure rates than White-owned and Asian-owned firms. The racial categories of persons in the US owning businesses can be broadly grouped into African American, Asian, Hispanic, and White, with large racial/ethnic gaps existing in self-employment rates and business performance. Minority entrepreneurs, especially Black and Hispanic business owners, are underrepresented among US business owners and underperform compared to non-minority owners. The sources of the gaps in the performance of minority firms can be examined through four key factors: management, money, markets, and access to credit, with racial and ethnic gaps persisting in access to credit and minority-owned businesses being disproportionately located in urban areas and serving ethnic retail markets.
