Summary

The Standards (Verification of Conformity to Standards and other Applicable Regulations of Imports) Regulations, 2019, apply to all goods imported into Kenya, with some exemptions. Importers must ensure goods meet Kenya standards and regulations. The Kenya Bureau of Standards appoints inspection bodies to verify conformity in the country of export or transshipment port. Goods non-compliant with Kenya standards are rejected and re-exported or destroyed. A Certificate of Conformity is required, and goods without it are subject to destination inspection at a 20% fee of the customs value. The Cabinet Secretary may exempt imports in the national interest. Specific importers, such as registered manufacturers and diplomats, are exempt from Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVOC) requirements with specified documents.
