Summary

The Knesset is Israel's parliament, consisting of 120 members elected by general, national, direct, equal, secret, and proportional elections. Every Israeli national 18 or older can vote, and those 21 or older can be elected, unless a court has deprived them of that right. The Knesset's term is four years, and elections take place on the third Tuesday of Cheshvan. The Knesset convenes for its first meeting after election results are published, and members must declare allegiance to the State of Israel. The Knesset has immunity, and its members have the right to vote, except for those who are not members of the Knesset but are part of the Government. Decisions are made by a majority of participating members, and meetings are usually public, unless decided otherwise. The Knesset holds two sessions a year, and its procedures and rules are prescribed by law or by the Knesset itself.
