Summary

The Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) is a pest that can harm oak trees, people, and animals. Key facts include:
- OPM caterpillars live almost exclusively in oak trees,
- They move in processions, cluster together, and build white silken webbing trails and nests,
- Their tiny hairs can cause itchy skin rashes, eye and throat irritations, and breathing difficulties,
- They eat oak leaves, stripping trees bare and leaving them vulnerable to other threats,
- OPM is a non-native species in England, accidentally introduced from southern Europe.
To control OPM, the Forestry Commission treats affected oak trees with insecticide in spring and summer. The public can help by reporting signs of OPM, including nests and caterpillars, and taking precautions to protect themselves and pets, such as keeping away from caterpillars and nests, and seeking medical advice if necessary.
