The Housing Assistance Council (HAC) provides resources to increase the capacity of rural housing organizations, and the Affordable Housing for Rural Veterans (AHRV) initiative supports local nonprofit housing development organizations that meet the affordable housing needs of veterans in rural areas. The initiative, funded by The Home Depot Foundation (THDF), provides grants for bricks-and-mortar projects that assist low-income, elderly, and disabled veterans with home repair and rehab needs, support homeless veterans, help veterans become homeowners, and secure affordable rental housing.

Grant applications must include a Letter of Intent (LOI) with a summary, overview, project description, other funding sources, and ongoing support. Grants will not exceed $30,000, and the standard grant period is 12 months. Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations, including 501(c)(3), tribally designated housing entities (TDHE), and Housing Authorities, that serve veterans at or below 80% of area median income in nonmetropolitan areas or counties that meet the USDA definition of rural.

Proposals are reviewed to determine if projects fall within the grant parameters, and full proposal submission is by invitation only. The HAC desires geographic diversity in selecting grantees throughout the United States. Only proposals accompanied by a photocopy of the organization's most recent determination letter from the IRS will be considered. Final grant actions will be announced by HAC in Spring 2017.
