Summary

Maryland has 579,173 small businesses, accounting for 99.5% of all businesses and 50.3% of all employees, with 1.1 million people employed by small businesses. The state's small businesses created 13,975 net new jobs in 2014, with firms employing 100-249 employees experiencing the largest gains. Minority-owned businesses totaled 203,326, and 88% of Maryland exporters were small firms, generating 25.7% of the state's total known exports. The unemployment rate was 4.2% in November 2016, down from 5.0% in 2015.
