Summary

A new global mercury treaty is unlikely to reduce mercury releases and may even result in increased mercury pollution, according to IPEN and other non-governmental organizations. The proposed treaty name, "Minamata Convention", is also seen as dishonoring the victims of the Minamata tragedy, as it contains no obligations to reduce mercury releases to water and no obligations to clean up contaminated sites. Key areas where the treaty falls short include artisanal small-scale gold mining, coal-fired power plants, and contaminated sites, with no clear phase-out date, limits on mercury imports, or cleanup of contaminated sites.
