Summary

The dignity of individuals with same-sex desire is often disrespected by law and citizens, and invoking human rights to restore full citizenship for sexual minorities is doubtful in many parts of the world, including Africa. Three reasons make it difficult: same-sex desire is characterized as "un-African" and a Western imposition; the human rights discourse is often invoked by Western governments and media as a discourse of modernity and progress; and individuals with same-sex desire are stigmatized as less than human. The author proposes strategies centered around human dignity to engage in the struggle for emancipation of sexual minorities.
