Summary

Researchers explored the effectiveness of offering alternative courses to prosecution for drivers detected using mobile phones while driving, focusing on perceptions and experiences of a specific educational intervention. 46 semi-structured interviews revealed four key themes: police officer discretion, police-public interactions, course experiences, and post-course considerations. The study found that course attendance can develop normative alignment and appreciation of instrumental consequences associated with mobile phone use, impacting self-reported mobile phone use while driving. However, the decision to cease offering such courses in the UK was made without evidence of their effectiveness, highlighting the need for further research on tackling mobile phone use by drivers.
