Multifamily buildings offer substantial untapped energy efficiency potential and financial savings opportunities, with 4.73 million units in the Midwest representing 15% of the total housing stock. Energy efficiency upgrades can save energy, lower energy bills, and improve health, safety, and comfort. Multifamily rentals have higher energy expenditures per square foot, averaging 34% fewer energy-efficient features, and renters spend $30 billion nationwide on energy each year. Every dollar invested in energy efficiency can return at least three dollars in benefits. Low-income renters are disproportionately affected, spending 20% or more of their income on energy. Tailored program design, joint utility program delivery, one-stop shops, data access, and financing options can help achieve deep energy savings in multifamily buildings.
