Summary

A nationwide movement is calling for a $15 per hour minimum wage, with many cities and employers already adopting this rate. The banking industry, often associated with high wages, has a significant number of low-wage workers, with almost one in three retail banking employees earning less than $15 per hour. Bank tellers, the largest occupation in the industry, have a median hourly wage of $12.44, with almost three-quarters earning less than $15 per hour. The workforce is predominantly female, with Latinos overrepresented. A $15 minimum wage for bank workers would help improve living standards, reduce earnings inequality, and lessen reliance on public assistance. In New York State, over half of bank tellers earn less than $15 per hour, with many relying on public assistance, costing over $100 million per year. A $15 minimum wage would be a step towards raising wages and easing disparities between frontline workers and executives.
