Summary

Nepal's Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement aims to limit global average temperature rise to 1.5°C. Nepal is highly vulnerable to climate change due to its fragile topography and limited adaptive capacity. The NDC presents enhanced targets for 2021-2030, including expanding clean energy generation to 15,000 MW, ensuring 15% of total energy demand is supplied from clean energy sources, and increasing sales of electric vehicles to 90% of private passenger vehicle sales. The targets also include reducing emissions from the cooking sector, maintaining 45% of the country's area under forest cover, and treating 380 million liters/day of wastewater. Nepal calls on all parties to increase ambition and move towards emission reduction pathways consistent with the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C warming limit.
