Summary

From 2017 to 2019, an estimated average of 106,700 multifamily residential building fires were reported annually in the US, resulting in an average of 400 deaths, 3,875 injuries, and $1.7 billion in property loss. Multifamily residential building fires accounted for 29% of all residential building fires, with cooking being the leading cause (74%) and small, confined fires accounting for 71% of these fires. Smoke alarms were present in 64% of nonconfined multifamily residential building fires, and automatic extinguishing systems were present in 15% of these fires.
