Summary

Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, has seen minimal improvement despite decades of international development work and a high number of foreign NGOs. Research on partnerships between international NGOs (INGOs) and Haitian organizations (HNGOs) found that INGOs' claims of equality and participation are often idealized, and that they tend to dominate decision-making and implementation processes to demonstrate impact to donors, compromising sustainability. Alternative models of engagement, such as supporting social change and global networking, may provide more sustainable processes of change, but are restricted by established project interaction structures and donor power.
