Summary

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking public comment on a proposed cleanup for the NIPSCO Bailly Generating Facility in Chesterton, Indiana, where coal ash disposal has contaminated the adjacent Indiana Dunes National Park. The proposed cleanup involves eliminating the source of contamination by digging up and disposing of coal ash, using In-Situ Solidification and Stabilization for ash below the groundwater, and utilizing Monitored Natural Attenuation to ensure groundwater no longer poses a risk to plants and wildlife. A 45-day public comment period is open from July 6 to August 19, and the EPA will address comments in a Final Decision/Response to Comments document.
