Summary

Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE) in imported textiles are a potential source of nonylphenol (NP) in the environment. A study of 100 cotton textile samples found 28 contained NPE above the detection limit, and further testing showed NPE was released during washing. It's estimated that imported cotton underwear could have accounted for up to 173kg of NPE emissions to the water environment in 2011. Most samples (96%) were non-EU manufactured, where there are no restrictions on NPE use. The study suggests that imported textiles could be a major contributing factor to NP emissions in the environment.
