Summary

NSF has a long history of investing in cyberinfrastructure, and the Cyberinfrastructure Framework for 21st Century Science and Engineering (CIF21) is a new approach to managing and investing in cyberinfrastructure development and deployment. CIF21 aims to promote new research opportunities and partnerships across all science and engineering fields by providing integrated and scalable cyberinfrastructure. The goals of CIF21 include identifying common methods and approaches in software, data, networking, cybersecurity, and advanced computing infrastructure, and promoting the development of a scientific workforce with appropriate skills and training. A new coordinated NSF-wide strategy for Advanced Computing Infrastructure (ACI) was developed as a key component of the CIF21 framework. CIF21 is governed by a steering committee and has four major areas of responsibility, including development of solicitation guidance, coordination of activities, convening of writing groups, and programmatic planning and budgeting. Investments in FY 2012 focus on building new communities of developers and users of digital environments and developing core data and computational technologies. Key initiatives include the EarthCube program, Software Infrastructure for Sustained Innovation (SI2) program, and BigData Senior Steering Group (BDSSG) solicitation. In FY 2013, CIF21 will continue to develop community efforts and prototype systems, and address data cyberinfrastructure needs.
