Summary

Local agencies must provide nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support, to participants, and develop an annual nutrition education plan. Participant contacts, including individual or group sessions, must be made available at least twice during each six-month certification period. Nutrition education contacts must be documented in each participant's certification file. The local agency must also ensure that food delivery systems are designed and operated to provide adequate participant access to supplemental foods, and that participants receive authorized supplemental foods free of charge. State agencies may operate up to three types of food delivery systems, including retail, home delivery, and direct distribution, and must ensure compatibility with health and nutrition education services. Food instruments and cash-value vouchers must comply with specific requirements, including bearing information on authorized supplemental foods, dates of use, and redemption periods.
