Summary

The NYC In-Season Cycling Indicator estimates trends in regular bicycle use in NYC. The indicator is based on a 12-hour manual count of cyclists on a single weekday of the year with no precipitation, conducted at 6 key locations. From 1985 to 2006, the count was taken only once per year, but since 2007, it has been conducted three times per year, and since 2008, 10 counts have been taken between April and October. In 2014, automated loop induction counters were introduced on the East River Bridges, providing continuous and more robust data. The indicator shows consistent growth in regular cycling in NYC, with an index value of 83 in 1986, 100 in 2000, and 437 in 2014. The data is adjusted for daily variations and indexed to a base year of 2000 to allow for simple comparisons between values.
