Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), newly-trained Registered Nurses (RNs), and experienced RNs are the most difficult to recruit at long-term care (LTC) facilities in New York City, due to a shortage of workers, non-competitive salaries, and COVID-19 vaccine or booster refusal. Retention difficulties are mainly caused by staff leaving for better pay and benefits, fear of COVID-19 exposure, and vaccine or booster requirements. Nearly 50% of respondents plan to expand RN and LPN positions, while 40% want to expand paraprofessional positions. Traditional recruitment strategies are less effective, and more creative approaches, such as internal referral programs, bonuses, and increased linkages to schools, are needed to address staffing difficulties.
