Summary

The Home Office consulted on proposed amendments to the Firefighters' Pension Scheme (England) Regulations 2014 as part of the McCloud remedy, seeking views on moving all members to the 2015 scheme and closing legacy schemes to future accrual from 31 March 2022. The consultation received 25 responses, mostly from Fire and Rescue Authorities and groups representing firefighter pension scheme members. The Home Office is confident the amendments will achieve the policy aim of implementing the first phase of the McCloud remedy, ensuring all members are treated equally in respect of pensionable service accrued after 31 March 2022. The changes will remove transitional protection found to be discriminatory in the McCloud and Sargeant cases, with all remaining legacy scheme members moving to the reformed scheme from 1 April 2022.
