Disability status among older Americans aged 65 and over increased from 2008 to 2012. The percentage of older Americans with a disability rose from 34.7% in 2008 to 36.5% in 2012. The number of disabilities also increased, with 44.7% of older Americans having one or more disabilities in 2012. The most common types of disabilities were difficulty walking, difficulty climbing stairs, and difficulty performing daily activities. The geographic distribution of older Americans with disabilities varied, with the top nine states accounting for 44.1% of the total population aged 65 and over with a disability in 2012. The percentage of older Americans with a disability living in poverty was 24.1% in 2012. The majority of older Americans with disabilities lived with family members or in their own homes, with 44.1% living alone in 2012. The percentage of older Americans with a disability living below 150% of the poverty threshold was 34.5% in 2012.
