Summary

The City and County of San Francisco's Public Works Order No: 187592 establishes guidelines for protecting and preserving survey monuments within the city. The order supersedes Order 178,985 and is governed by the California Business and Professions Code and Streets and Highways Code. Survey monuments provide horizontal and vertical survey control and must be located, referenced, and re-set by the City & County Surveyor or a licensed land surveyor before construction or excavation work. A Corner Record or Record of Survey must be filed with the County Surveyor before work begins, and a fee of $3,488 per monument is required for the referencing process. Applicants can also hire a private surveyor, but must meet with the County Surveyor and file pre- and post-construction records. Failure to comply may result in a minimum fee of $10,000 per monument for reestablishment.
