Summary

EPA promotes energy efficiency and safe use of ozone-friendly substances, phasing out HCFCs, including R-22, to protect the ozone layer. The US will ban production, import, and use of HCFCs in a step-wise fashion, with R-22 phased out by 2020, and only recovered, recycled, or reclaimed supplies available after 2020. Homeowners can continue to use R-22 air conditioners, but should maintain units properly, select reliable service contractors, and consider switching to ozone-friendly refrigerants when replacing equipment. Alternative refrigerants like R-410A are available, and ENERGY STAR qualified systems can save energy costs.
