Summary

La XVIII Sesión de la Asamblea General de la UICN, celebrada en Perth, Australia, del 28 de noviembre al 5 de diciembre de 1990, se refiere a la conservación del panda gigante. La Asamblea General reitera la Recomendación 17.50 y expresa su preocupación por la fragmentación y disminución del hábitat natural del panda gigante, así como por la falta de autosuficiencia de la población en cautividad. Se insta a los poseedores de pandas gigantes a participar en una evaluación de las poblaciones en cautividad y a establecer una estrategia mundial de reproducción. También se exhorta a intensificar la cooperación en la investigación y reproducción de los pandas gigantes en cautividad. Se recomienda una moratoria a la adquisición de pandas gigantes procedentes de la República Popular de China hasta julio de 1992, momento en el que se decidirá la futura localización de los pandas gigantes en cautividad basándose en las conclusiones de la Conferencia de Wáshington de 1991.
