Summary

Canada's long-term care sector has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 840 outbreaks and more than 80% of all COVID-19 deaths in the country. A comparison with 16 other OECD countries shows that Canada had a similar number of COVID-19 deaths in long-term care (5,324) to the OECD average, but the highest proportion of deaths occurring in long-term care (81%).
