Summary

Women and girls have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, facing uneven impacts in areas such as workforce participation, unpaid care and domestic work, emotional and physical well-being, access to goods and services, and relief and social protection measures. Rapid Gender Assessment surveys in 45 countries found that women were more likely to lose their jobs, experience reduced paid work hours, and shoulder increased unpaid care and domestic work, with partnered women living with children being particularly affected. Women's access to essential services, including sexual and reproductive health services, was also impeded, and their physical and mental well-being was strained. National responses have insufficiently addressed the needs of women and girls, with women being less likely to receive cash relief or social protection, and younger women and girls being especially left out of government support and social protection schemes.
