Summary

The Research Passport System is a mechanism for sharing pre-engagement information about researchers between Higher Education employers and NHS organizations. It provides clear guidance on required checks, a robust process for documenting and evidencing checks, and clear principles for NHS organizations to rely on those checks. The system aims to avoid duplication of checks and facilitate faster study start-up. A Research Passport is valid for the duration of a research project or up to three years and may be required for researchers without a contractual relationship with the NHS. Researchers who are employed by the NHS, independent contractors, or have an honorary clinical contract do not need a Research Passport. The Research Passport form is completed by the researcher, their line manager, and HR department, and includes sections on personal details, research activity, and pre-engagement checks. The completed form is authorized by an NHS organization and becomes a valid Research Passport that can be provided to other NHS organizations.
