The role of the employer was most obvious in cases of redundancy, and employment-related factors, such as organisational change and poor working relationships, also affected retirement decisions. The approach of the employer to the 'right to request' influenced individuals' decision making and retirement outcomes, with three employer approaches identified: employer instigated formal, employer instigated informal, and individual instigated formal.
