Summary

The Ibero-America Institute for Economic Research discusses the political determinants of international arms transfers, distinguishing between the decision to export arms and the value of arms exported. A gravity model of trade is estimated using a two-stage panel-data approach for 104 exporting countries from 1950 to 2007, considering factors such as democracy, political orientation, and military pacts. The results indicate that political closeness between countries is a key determinant of arms transfers, and that economic and strategic interests are not the only drivers. The study finds that differences in political orientation have a significant negative impact on the probability of arms transfers between countries.
