Long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are at risk for COVID-19 transmission due to residents' age and underlying medical conditions. To optimize personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, healthcare personnel (HCP) should wear facemasks at all times, and follow Standard, Droplet, and Contact Precautions with eye protection when interacting with residents with respiratory infections. Strategies to conserve PPE include: understanding PPE inventory and supply chain, communicating with regional healthcare coalitions, allocating staff to designated areas, assessing individuals for fever and respiratory symptoms, and restricting non-essential visits and consultations. In case of PPE shortages, alternatives such as reusable PPE, international gowns, and extended use or reuse of facemasks and respirators can be considered. Priorities for respirator use include aerosol-generating procedures, and alternatives such as PAPRs, elastomeric respirators, and ventilated headboards can be used if respirators are unavailable.
