Summary

Social media platforms have become a key source of political news and information for voters in India's national election. An analysis of Facebook and WhatsApp data over a two-month period found that more than a quarter of the content shared by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a fifth of the content shared by the Indian National Congress (INC) is junk news. The Samajwadi and Bahujan Samaj Party (SP-BSP) shared very little sensational or conspiratorial content. On WhatsApp, a third of the BJP's images and a quarter of the INC's images were catalogued as divisive and conspiratorial. Misinformation on WhatsApp primarily took the form of visual content, while on Facebook it involved links to sensational news sites and visual content. The study found limited amounts of hate speech, gore, or pornography in either platform sample. However, the proportion of polarizing political news and information in circulation over social media in India was found to be worse than in other recent international elections, except the 2016 US Presidential election.
