Summary

SCS Engineers conducted a public opinion survey in Omaha, Nebraska, to gauge residents' attitudes and opinions on solid waste collections. The survey, which included 550 participants, found that residents are generally familiar with and satisfied with the current garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection services. However, less than half of the respondents were aware of the city's recycling drop-off sites and other specialized waste collection programs. The survey also explored potential new collection programs, including Pay As You Throw (PAYT) and carted and automated collections, with mixed reactions from respondents. Key findings include:

Most respondents use 32-gallon containers for garbage and would need 2-3 containers to meet their weekly needs.
 Most respondents are satisfied with the 18-gallon recycling bin program, but some find the bins too small.
92% of respondents place yard waste out for collection, with most using a combination of containers and bags.
 There is a mixed reaction to co-collection and comingling of yard wastes, with some preferring separation and others favoring co-mingling.
Reaction to PAYT is mixed, with some strongly in favor and others strongly opposed, but overall, there is some basic support for the concept.
 Most respondents feel that one 96-gallon container would be sufficient for their garbage in a carted and automated collections system.
