Summary

The Minister of Health made regulations relating to trans-fat in foodstuffs under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, 1972. The regulations define terms such as "conjugated linoleic acid," "industrially produced trans-fatty acids," and "natural trans-fatty acids." The sale, manufacturing, and importation of oils and fats with trans-fat content exceeding 2 grams per 100 grams are prohibited. A "Trans-Fat free" claim requires less than 1 gram of trans-fat per 100 grams of total fat or oil in the final product. The regulations specify a methodology for analyzing trans-fat content and will come into operation six months after publication.
