Summary

Myanmar's media landscape has undergone significant changes since 2013, with the abolition of prepublication censorship and increased access to the internet and mobile technologies. A 2018 audience study found that television is the preferred medium for consuming news, but social media, particularly Facebook, is gaining popularity. The study also revealed that people prefer local media and have a culture of sharing news and information, with many trusting state-owned media to deliver reliable news. However, the level of media literacy in Myanmar remains low, with many struggling to decipher media content and verify information. The study's findings are based on a qualitative approach, using focus groups and in-depth interviews with 168 participants from four different states/regions. The report provides 12 recommendations for the Myanmar media industry and media development organizations to improve content production and distribution, and to enhance media literacy in the country.
